What do I need to build a deck?
This diagram shows all the components you’ll need to construct your deck. From Stewart Timber, you’ll need to purchase:
- Decking posts – these are usually set in concrete in holes in the ground for support.
- Decking joists – you cut these to size for the joists, ledgers, rim joists, and noggins.
- Weed membrane – this prevents wildlife sprouting under the deck and poking through the deck.
- Decking boards – you walk on these and cut them to size to use for risers/tread for steps.
- Spindles / decking panels – they line the sides of the deck to enclose the space.
- Stringer – if you have a raised deck, the stringer helps create steps with cut-down decking boards.
- Hand rail – you can add a finished deck rail to complete the deck sides. You’ll need a fillet rail to keep it secure.
- Fixings – you’ll need different screws and joist hangers to join the timber together.
- Decking stain – after a few weeks, you should protect and personalise your deck with stain.
Make things simple and purchase one of your decking kits which has all the pieces you need to construct a simple deck. You can read our guide on how to lay a deck for more details on the proper construction process.
Decking - FAQs
How many years will decking last?
Depending on how well you care for your wooden deck, it can last 10-25 years. Cleaning, oiling, and refinishing it will help it last longer. Our composite decking has a 15 year warranty and doesn’t need as much maintenance to keep it sturdy for years to come.
Do you need planning permission for decking in Scotland?
You usually don’t need planning permission for constructing a deck in your garden in Scotland. If your deck is no more than 50cm from the ground, it’s wholly behind the principal elevation or side elevation if road facing, if it’s not in a conservation area (unless the deck is under 4 metres squared), and your home is not a listed building, then you don’t need planning permission.
What is the cheapest decking option?
The cheapest material for decking is wood. Composite decking is slightly more expensive, though you don’t need to spend as much money maintaining it over its lifetime.
How much does decking cost?
The cost of decking depends on the type of decking material, your design, its size, and the extra products you need to bring it all together. Our basic decking kits begin at £380. Larger projects with stairs, spindles/panels and handrails can cost into the £1000s.
