What do I need to build a fence?
This diagram shows all the elements you’ll need to build your garden fence. From Stewart Timber, you’ll need to purchase:
- Metposts – these are metal posts which hold fence posts in place underground.
- Fence posts – these are long, thick vertical posts which add support to the sections of fencing.
- Fence boards / fence panels – these are the pieces which make up the bulk of the fence.
- Fencing rails – these are horizontal posts that fence boards are attached to.
- Trellis panels – these are optional decorative fence toppers.
- Fence post caps – these are optional decorative fence post toppers.
- Fencing tools – you’ll need various tools to construct your fencing.
- Nails – these attach the fencing elements together.
Use our fencing calculator to calculate what pieces and quantities you need for your fencing project. Check out our guide to how to build a fence for the process.
Fencing - FAQs
How much is a new fence?
The cost of a fence depends on the style, materials and size. Pre-made panels will cost more than putting boards together yourself. You can put your measurements into our fencing calculator to work out how much your project may come to.
What time of year is fencing the cheapest?
You’re more likely to find deals on fencing in off seasons, like winter, where the weather conditions aren’t ideal for constructing fencing.
What is the easiest fence to install?
Timber fences are considered the easiest to install. The assembly process is repetitive and straightforward so most novice DIYers will be able to do it over a couple of days with relative ease!
